FRP fiberglass composite materials are widely used in industrial infrastructure. This article introduces the properties of FRP materials, explains the key points for selecting unsaturated polyester resin for storage tanks, pipelines and anti-corrosion engineering scenarios, and provides GoodUPR FRP resin selection reference solutions. Free samples and technical support are available upon inquiry.
I. FRP Composites: The "Lightweight Steel Reinforcement" for Industrial Infrastructure
As global infrastructure construction develops toward lightweight, corrosion-resistant and long-life solutions, Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites are rapidly replacing traditional steel, concrete and wood. They become preferred materials for airport aprons, underground pipe networks, chemical anti-corrosion projects, marine engineering and other sectors.
Compared with conventional metallic materials, FRP composites feature three core advantages: • Lightweight & High Strength: Its specific gravity is only 1/4 of steel, while the specific strength reaches 4–5 times that of steel, greatly cutting transportation and installation costs. • Corrosion Resistance & Long Service Life: It can serve 30–50 years under acid, alkali, salt spray and humid environments with nearly zero maintenance. • Flexible Design: It can be molded into complex shapes via hand lay-up, filament winding, pultrusion, compression molding and other processes.
Within the whole FRP product system, Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPR) acts as the matrix material, accounting for 30%–40% of raw material costs. It directly determines the mechanical properties, weather resistance and molding efficiency of finished FRP parts. Selecting the proper resin means half the success of FRP products.
II. Resin Selection Guidelines for Three Typical Industrial Infrastructure Scenarios
1. Underground Pipe Networks & Storage Tanks – Prioritize Corrosion Resistance
Municipal water supply & drainage, chemical sewage and oil & gas pipelines are constantly exposed to corrosive media, which imposes strict requirements on the chemical resistance of resins. • Recommended resin type: Isophthalic (ISO) or Bisphenol A corrosion-resistant resin • Key indicators: Acid value 18–25 mgKOH/g, Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT) ≥70℃ • Process suggestion: Medium viscosity (400–700 cps) resin with high reactivity is preferred to guarantee sufficient fiber wet-out and complete curing.
2. Cooling Towers, Fan Blades & Building Profiles – Balance Mechanical Performance and Weather Resistance
Large-scale FRP structural components withstand long-term wind load, ultraviolet radiation and temperature fluctuations, demanding high tensile strength and anti-yellowing performance. • Recommended resin type: General-purpose orthophthalic (GP) resin or isophthalic weather-resistant resin • Key indicators: Gel time 10–15 min, Exothermic peak 190–210℃, Solid content 63–68% • Process suggestion: Medium viscosity, high reactivity resin is preferred for pultrusion to ensure continuous molding speed and good surface gloss.
3. Airport Aprons, Port Terminals & Industrial Flooring – Wear Resistance and Impact Resistance
FRP products under heavy load need balanced hardness, toughness and impact resistance. • Recommended resin type: High-hardness orthophthalic (GP) resin or toughened modified resin • Key indicators: Barcol hardness ≥40, Curing time ≤30 min • Process suggestion: Use with checkered cloth reinforcement layer to improve interlaminar shear strength.
III. Common Pitfalls in Resin Selection
- Focusing only on price while ignoring solid content: Low-cost resins often use diluents to reduce expenses, resulting in low solid content, poor product strength and high shrinkage of finished parts.
- Mismatched curing system: Non-promoted resins require manual proportioning of curing agent (MEKP) and accelerator (cobalt solution). Improper ratio may cause under-curing or cracking.
- Neglecting storage conditions: UPR has a shelf life of about 3 months when stored below 25℃ in cool shaded areas. High temperature and direct sunlight will accelerate self-polymerization and lead to resin failure.
IV. Recommended Product: GoodUPR 191A General-Purpose FRP Resin
For mainstream processes such as hand lay-up and spray-up in industrial infrastructure, Huizhou GoodUPR Composite Materials Co., Ltd. presents 191A General-Purpose FRP Resin. It is a mature orthophthalic unsaturated polyester resin optimized for translucent and general FRP products.
Product Features
• Medium viscosity and high reactivity with excellent glass fiber wet-out property • High mechanical strength and outstanding surface gloss for finished products • Suitable for hand lay-up and spray-up processes; widely applied in FRP panels, pipes, storage tanks, cooling towers and other industrial infrastructure components • Non-pre-promoted type. The addition amount of curing agent is recommended to be no less than 1.0% of resin weight. The exact ratio shall be tested and adjusted according to process and product characteristics.
